What a find, right in the middle of the sorcerer's souq. Dar Tha Tha is a slice of '70s Marrakesh that has resisted renovation, preserving its mismatched tiles and quirky French colonial interior. A laid-back atmosphere and a communal kitchen you're free to use make this cosy retreat complete.

An ideal bolthole for serious shoppers, nostalgic hippies and solo female travellers in a safe, central setting right in the heart of the souqs. The house is tiny, with a Lilliputian courtyard set up with table and chairs. The bare-bones sitting room could be more comfortable and colourful, but the friendly, unpretentious atmosphere gives you a reason to hang around, and the four guestrooms are neat and upbeat. Room 3 (with air-con) is the largest, but it's a touch dark due to the high window. If you can, book bright, cheery Room 4, which has air-con and its own shaded terrace. When you're too tuckered out from shopping to cook or brave the Djemaa, your host Simo has a culinary diploma and can cook you up a storm.
