In 2006, owner Gerta May rescued two baby toco toucans who had been stolen out of their nest. She nursed them back to health and introduced them to her blue macaw, Lolli. Now they live in the tree in front of the pousada - giving their seal of approval to the Sitio dos Tucanos.Despite this recent history, Pousada Sitio dos Tucanos has been here since 1988 - it's one of the oldest on the island (and there have always been plenty of toucans frolicking around the lush green grounds). These days, the place is almost as rustic as it was 20 years ago; at the southern tip of the island, it is surrounded by jungly wilderness. It sits high atop a morro, with sweeping views down to the village and beach below. Breakfast is served in the main house, as are creative, delicious dinners (for an extra charge, obviously). Halfway down the hill, overlooking a gurgling brook, the six rooms have hard wood floors, mosquito nets and large balconies. Void of TVs, telephones and air-conditioners, Sitio dos Tucanos is a retreat for travelers who want to be surrounded by nature and all its sounds and scents.
