At the southern tip of the island, just before the paved road turns into a packed dirt path, 500m (0.32mi) from the beach, is a little hideaway called the Albergue do Pirata. True to its name, it's a place where adventurers congregate to tell tales and swill beer, then rest their weary bodies, before they set sail once again.

This 'international hostel', as it calls itself, does attract guests from around the world, thanks in part to the accommodating, English-speaking owner. Its highlight is undoubtedly the lively restaurant and bar that occupies the front deck. Dorm rooms have six to 10 beds, each with lockers to secure belongings. They lack natural light, but painted brick walls add an element of style. Rooms are generally segregated by gender, but this is more of a guideline than a rule. There are also a few private rooms for couples, which fetch a higher price.
