At the tip of the Vieux Port, this three-star pad is effectively two hotels: about half of the 56 rooms, though comfortable, have run-of-the-mill decor, while the other half have stunning interiors designed by a Parisian architectural firm. (The dramatic difference is reflected in the price, of course.)Sleek and super stylish, the soothing aqua and brown-toned remodelled rooms occupy three of the six floors (there's a lift), and are an absolute knock-out, with floating blond timber floors, light beech wood furniture. Unrenovated rooms are somewhat dated but decent, and no matter which kind you're staying in, you'll have air-conditioning, spa jets in the baths, and soundproofing that spares you the throes of the urban tumult. Plus all rooms have phones, TVs with pay-per-view channels, and minibars. Portside rooms have prized views. There are no immediate plans to lift all rooms to the standard of the chic renovated ones, though it is slated to take place at some point. Tonic's two other hotels are in Paris and France's glitzy beach resort town of Biarritz.

You're likely to need your sunglasses at breakfast, which is served in a stark, arctic white-on-white room with views over the port. On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays it transforms into a branché (trendy) bar from 15:00 to 21:30 and serves brunch in the morning.
