Not being a tourist destination per se, central Marseille has something of a hotel shortage (which you'll know if you've ever tried to get a room here in summer, or when the Olympique Marseille, OM, soccer team's playing), so this swish new place is a long-awaited addition.Hi-tech facilities combined with edgy works of modern art throughout the establishment (including avant-garde chairs in the lobby) are the hallmark of this brand new 100-room hotel. Three of the rooms here are fully equipped for wheelchairs, and all are soundproofed, air-conditioned and have La Compagnie de Provence products in the bathroom. The elite top floor houses eight executive rooms and eight swanky suites with private terraces. On-site is an equally swish restaurant, Victor Café, but the best news is that (surprisingly rare for such a sun-splashed city) here's an outdoor swimming pool to cool off in. In a choice location five minutes' walk from the Vieux Port and city centre, it's also close to the plage des Catalans - another fine place for a dip (July and August only). Thirty car spaces are available (at a price) for hotel guests at the public car park n the building's basement.

One of the most serene spots to watch the incandescent sunset over the city is the Jardin du Pharo, a hilltop park surrounding the Palais, where kids kick soccer balls on its lush lawns. There are plenty of secluded spots to take in the views across to the old port as well as the new docklands and ferry terminal.
Victor Café chef Jérôme Pollo hasn't been put off by this city centre location and has planted vines on one side of the hotel, which can be seen from the top-floor executive rooms. You'll also get to admire his herb garden at the entrance to the hotel.
