Lonely Planet review

Housed in an atmospheric old Melaka building dating back to the end of World War I, this eccentric backpacker joint is as basic as you can get, but boasts one remarkable feature: its own dipping pool in the inner courtyard.

The exterior of this building is fantastic: exquisitely tiled, with an intricate frieze encased in glass running around the top. Inside, the common room, with its chipped peeling wooden counter, faded floor tiles and mismatched, worn out furniture, has a certain seedy appeal. This is a no-frills establishment, with more than a hint of strangeness. Rooms are fitted with beds (no mosquito nets), fans and not much else, yet have their own exterior trellises - for what reason is anybody's guess. There is only one shared cold shower and toilet, yet guests have their own dipping pool. Luxury it is not - memorable it certainly is.
