Lonely Planet review

From the outset things bode well at this four-star property; great location, bright and airy reception and friendly staff. But the slick makeover that swept through a few years ago is waning in some of the rooms. Nevertheless Batman's is ideal for those looking for central and comfortable digs without fatally wounding the hip pocket.

There are distinct choices for accommodation. Standard rooms (three-and-a-half stars) are decidedly snug and functional and the lack of views may box some visitors in. Best to up the ante and opt for a Club Room. These are significantly bigger, with roomy bathrooms and plenty of space to strew the luggage. The one-bedroom apartments feature some impressive views and the price tag gets you finer furnishings and wide open spaces. Rooms 2209, 3309 and 4409 come with spa - particularly inviting after a hard day tramping around the city. The fully kitted-out two-bed apartments are great value for groups and families. Photos of Melbourne in all rooms are a nice touch and the 5 Shilling Bar isn't the worst place in town to down a drink or two.
