The Savoy has funked up. Getting full marks for effort and not content to rest on its dated laurels, it's transformed itself into a contemporary, boutique-style hotel. We like a creative approach. A traditional Art Deco design offering salubrious accommodation, this grand old lady is greeting the 21st century with a modern outlook.Past a lobby that fuses a time-honoured marble approach with minimalist flair you'll find practical rooms with enough flair to set them apart from stodgy chain hotels. We like the bold splashes of red in the furnishings, drapes and beds contrasted against the straight-laced black and white tiles in the bathrooms. Standard rooms are functional in size and pleasing in aesthetics and the executive rooms are considerably larger with couches that fold out for additional bedding for two. Some also have great 180-degree views. Bigger again are the Junior Suites, with mezzanine master bedrooms. A handful of rooms face the tall, interior atrium and have floor-to-ceiling windows to make the most of it, but the drawback is a lack of privacy and external views.

Do a bit of shopping at the Queen Victoria Market in the morning and see if there's a game of footy on at the Telstra Dome in the afternoon. Of course, there always the Direct Factory Outlets (DFO) shopping plaza next to Southern Cross Station.
