Grand in both scale and aesthetics, this city landmark hasn't broken the mould for top-end executive hotels. It does work hard to overcome its could-be-anywhere weaknesses - with a glitzy lobby and lashings of marble. Standard rooms aren't as spacious as you might expect, but have all the mod cons, plus impressive marble bathrooms.

As you move up the floors, room dimensions increase, services crank up a notch and, naturally, rates escalate. The decor is graciously conservative. Floor to ceiling windows add most of the ambience courtesy of spectacular views of the city, Yarra, MCG and Botanical Gardens. If you're in town to impress, opt for a higher corner suite with 180° views and ample space to unpack the Prada luggage. These rooms also have DVD players and access to the Grand Club Lounge on the 31st floor (think frequent-flyer lounge with DVD library, newspapers and work stations). All guests can use the indoor pool, spa and saunas. A highlight for fitness fanatics is the sizeable gym - if you can't work off your over-indulging here then you're not really trying. The hotel's prime location, its polished service and roll-call of facilities means that on weekends this place pulls in the pleasure-seekers.
