Reminiscent of an art deco ocean liner from the golden age of luxury travel, the Westin is easily one of the city's grandest and greatest hotels. The high-ceilinged lobby, with a sweeping central staircase, features stellar examples of photography by artists such as Bill Henson (from his famous Paris Opera Project series).

Some standard rooms feature Country Road furniture and plush king-size beds, but they face inwards, so try and nab one of the suites on the corner of Swanston and Collins Sts - the views of the art deco Manchester Unity Building are striking, and you can even revel in the cityscape from your bathtub should the mood take you. If you nab a room facing Flinders Lane, you'll be treated to a small balcony where you can stand (yes stand, we did say it was small) and watch life go by down below. All this, plus a fabulous two-lane indoor lap pool - what more could you want?
