The Sebel Melbourne has a grand sense of style, located in the old Bank of Australasia building. Actually, it doesn't have much choice: the building is heritage listed, which means that the former bank's interior features, including teller windows, are required to be left intact. As soon as you step into the foyer, with its tastefully restored gold-leaf detailing and wood-panelling, you're guaranteed to feel important.

The rooms are airy and light-filled but they can't be said to be at the cutting-edge of interior design; in this kind of environment perhaps they don't need to be. Instead, they've been subtly upgraded along clean, minimalist lines; there's a washing machine and dryer in each suite. The loft suites are maybe the pick, split-level fancies with low-slung windows that are perfect for long-distance people watching on busy Collins. The Sebel also features a gym, but you're pretty close to the Yarra River here and jogging beside it presents a pleasing alternative. The Treasury restaurant in the foyer is a lovely bonus - dining amid the remains of old-time high finance is a giddy thrill. Sebel concierges are friendly and will clue you in on other options for Melbourne good times.
