One of the four sentinels opposite the National Auditorium, Latin America's first W is a 25-floor business hotel that's determined to break away from the stodginess of places like the JW Marriott or Intercontinental. The W dares to have fun. Fun is the future, and the W is definitely futuristic. The fun begins as you cross the threshold and see a laser projection of the word 'Welcome' at your feet. It continues into the Whiskey bar (where a creamsicle martini will set you back 100 pesos) and even extends to the Wired business centre, with a deck for those who want to take their laptops outside. And if fun has a color, it must be red. Hallways are red, rooms are red, and the red-lit Red Lounge has red mats for chilling out. Transparent red partitions separate the tables at the Solea restaurant, which specializes in seafood à la mexicana. Rooms skillfully blend style, comfort and killer views, and feature goose-down quilts, high-tech entertainment and waterfall or massage showers (at the balcony end, which may appeal to exhibitionists). A spa takes up the entire third floor, and includes a 'relaxation pool' and temascal (pre-Hispanic sauna).

Take a stroll down Paseo de la Reforma to the National Anthropology Museum, the stupendous storehouse of Mexico's ancient treasures. For evening entertainment, see what's going on at the Auditorio Nacional, the 10,000 seat concert hall directly opposite the hotel. Behind the auditorium is the Centro Cultural del Bosque, a complex of six theaters that includes a showcase for contemporary dance.
Although we thought the hotel's trademark letter had something to do with the current occupant of the White House, there is no such connection: Ws belong to the Starwood Hotel chain. Since the runaway success of its flagship hotel in New York, the chain has rapidly expanded and now counts 21 Ws worldwide.
