Following the success of the Polanco neighbourhood's Hábita, that hotel's owners started a similarly cutting-edge, luxury lodging in a tranquil corner of trendy Condesa. Adjacent to lush Parque España, the circa 1920s structure has been quirkily made over in a style that combines Zen retreat with New York thrift store.Opened in 2005, the formidable building points like an arrow at the park. The handsome exterior has been restored to its original splendor and the inside redone by Parisian designer India Mahdavi. It's the embodiment of Condesa's newfound hipness. Forty rooms and suites surround a central atrium/restaurant, where guests can enjoy a lavish brunch. Decor dares to be minimal, with marshmallow beds backed by maple paneling and original arched windows providing ample light. High-tech entertainment complements the understated scheme, with DVD players and fully loaded iPods as standard equipment. The rooms encircle an atrium/bar that's become one of Condesa's trendiest nightspots, with a fabulous rooftop component overlooking lush Parque España. The concept continues down below with a cavernous dance club that doubles as a cinema on weekends (kids' matinees at 14:00).

Leaving aside the trend quotient, Condesa is perhaps the city's most pleasant area. Palms and jacarandas shade California Colonial homes and two delightful parks, Parque España and adjacent Parque México, are ideal for a jog or stroll. In the evening, make for the intersection of Tamaulipas and Michoacán, the heart of Condesa's cafe society, and take a sidewalk table at one of the boisterous bistros.
The oval-shaped Parque México was originally designed as a horserace track.
