While every other beach property modernized, the Raleigh painstakingly restored itself to pre-War glory. It succeeded in a big way. There's a tobacco-and-dark-wood men's club ambience and old school elegance here, complemented by modern design elements and amenities. Have a swim in the stunning pool; Esther Williams used to.Purchased in 2004 by celebrity hotelier André Balazs, who's got the Midas touch when it comes to Miami sleeps, the Raleigh is a breed apart - calm and classy, low-key and understated. The Ester Williams style pool is the best in town, no arguments - but you'll need plenty of self-confidence to bare your skin here. A downright fun and happening place to hang out all day long, the pool is a great place for dining, people-watching and listening to music. Most Deco hotels have thin walls and small rooms; that's mostly the case here. But these have a host of contemporary goodies, such as three separate phone lines, plasma TVs and high-end toiletries. Low platform beds make rolling out of bed in the morning very easy. Most rooms also have an ocean view.

A lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) crowd traditionally hits the sand at around 12th St, especially after the clubs close on Friday and Saturday. It's not like there's sex going on (there isn't - no big sand dunes); it's just a spot where gay men and lesbians happen to congregate. Sunday volleyball at 16:00, after a decent night's (morning's) sleep, is packed with fun-loving locals.
