This completely renovated Deco landmark doubles as a super-chic South Beach hangout with super service. While the lovely guestrooms aren't as mod as the lobby, they straddle the line between modern and classic with wood furnishings and shiny bathrooms. If you've got bucks, consider spending them here. Not content to let a bygone era be bygone, the National has resurrected the 1940s with aplomb. In fact the 1940s probably never looked as good as they do in the early 21st century. About a quarter of the rooms are more tropical than the rest and have balconies overlooking the palm-lined pool (which is so long you might have to put on glasses to see the end of it). If lounging is your preferred method of travel, suit up for the 'Zee Pool Lounge', particularly at dusk when candles light the beachside space. A refuge from South Beach bustle, accommodation is found in two buildings. Rooms in the tall, historic tower have ocean views, while cabana rooms with private terraces overlook the pool. Services include a 24-hour concierge, poolside yoga and massage and free high-speed internet access.

The 3720 sq m facility houses works by Cindy Sherman, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Jeff Koons.
