Everything's chic and chichi at The Tides, where service is ultra-cool but surprisingly gracious. From expansive ocean views to elegant dining and glamorous bartending, roll into South Beach on the Tides and you'll hope the tide never rolls out.Per usual, the great hotel lobbies set the tone. This one is awash in Latin jazz, soft lighting and overstuffed couches, and basically feels like the waiting room for Poseidon's underwater palace: massive sculptures, decorative arts and grand spaces. Rooms - all 45 of which face the ocean - are wonderfully soothing, decorated in a rich (like, very rich) palette of beige, cream and white. They all have telescopes for planetary or Hollywood stargazing, plasma TVs and relatively spacious bathrooms. As comfortable for those on business as on pleasure (although every business traveler to Miami mixes in a dash of pure pleasure).

The Lincoln Road Mall, a dynamic pedestrian strip, defies expectations: yes, it's a 'mall,' but its vibe remains stubbornly indie. Sure, it gets mobbed with tourists, but the crowd's makeup also includes many locals: child-laden families, midriff-bearing party girls, Botox babes on hardcore shopping sprees, gay men flocking to the trendiest bars and unfazed grandmas doing errands.
