A quiet, elegant inn, the Nash's expansive marble lobby leads to 54 rooms that are plush but simple, with tons of shiny blonde wood, beige-and-grey checked carpeting and furniture tucked into white slipcovers. The outdoor lounge is peaceful and features three small spa pools. The Nash is one of those South Beach hotels that doesn't distinguish itself from the outside. But inside, it's a peaceful and low-key refuge. There aren't too many upturned noses here. While the standard rooms can be small (what else is new in refurbished Deco hotels?), at least the bathrooms are bigger than closets. In fact all the bathrooms are outfitted with rainforest-like shower heads, marble counters and high-end fixtures. Reserve a suite, the smallest of which passes for an average person's idea of a regular-sized room. Terrace suites boast an outdoor shower on the porch. Whatever you choose, all accommodations represent good value. Breakfast, nothing to rearrange your schedule around, is basic; high speed Internet access is free. The three dipping pools are great for cooling off, but you won't be swimming laps preparing for the Olympics in them.

The Living Room (cnr NW 40th St & N Miami Ave), a striking work of public art in the Design District, is full of whimsy: an oversized stage set of a living room, complete with wallpaper and a couch flanked by tall lamps. The work has been described as an 'urban intervention,' blurring the line between art and architecture. It's meant to be a criticism of the lack and disappearance of public space.
