Address: Piazza della repubblica 17 , Milan 20124, Italy Show on map
This grandiose gem of a hotel has one major flaw - its position. Everything of interest in Milan is a taxi ride away. But if it's old-school glamour you're after you won't mind the slight inconvenience one bit.Every major city in the world needs an unrepentantly ostentatious hotel, and this is Milan's. This is an exquisite property, with fabulous public areas and where everything, from the beautiful chandeliers in the lobby to the writing desks in the suites, is a collectable. If you're the kind of traveller who gets intimidated by these kinds of properties, don't fret, the service is exemplary. The Classic guest rooms here are lovely, furnished in a late-19th-century style with marble bathrooms and Acqua di Parma toiletries. While you'd happily move up into the Deluxe or Junior suites, it's best to do it on someone else's expense account. There's also an ultra-modern spa and gym.

Unless you've brought your driver (and of course, mandatory bodyguard), you'll keep the doormen busy hailing taxis. While most things of interest in Milan are no more than a couple of kilometres away, this isn't the kind of place you leave in the morning with a day pack and a water bottle.
If you're wondering why the sheets feel so soft in the suites, it's because they're cashmere…of course!
