Address: Via san raffaele 3 , Milan 20121, Italy Show on map
A hip four-star design hotel situated behind an 1800-era facade just steps away from the Duomo, the Straf oozes cool from every pore of its cement walls and its sometimes offhand staff. For such a brave design, the Hotel Straf has been a stunning success, with designers, artists, media types and Japanese kids on a design pilgrimage. One thing's for certain though, they're not here for the size of the rooms (or the gym for that matter), which, unless you are up in the Executive rooms or Suites, envelop you like a cocoon. Considering the mix of materials used in the rooms - black stone, scratched mirrors and burnished brass - you'd think it would feel rather austere, but it works, at least for some. For many of the guests it doesn't just have to look cool, so thankfully the beds are comfortable, the Internet's fast and the LCD TVs have plenty of channels. Breakfast is generous and the bar's good for a post-shopping tipple.

This is a fantastic spot, with the entrance to the Duomo cathedral mere steps away, the shopping of Galleria Vittorio Emmanuelle II right next door, and you can walk up to Quadrilatero d'Oro - although like most guests at this hotel you'll need a taxi back with your shopping! You'll probably head back up to the Quadrilatero d'Oro for dinner, guests here tend to favour Armani's Nobu.
The relax rooms and well-being rooms feature chromatherapy and aromatherapy with massage armchairs.
