A fashionista's favourite, this elegant former convent couldn't be further from its 15th-century monastic roots - or closer to the throbbing heart of Milan's fashion houses. The rooms are lavishly decorated, many facing a wonderfully serene central courtyard.

This is a wonderful address for those on a shopping expedition, as demonstrated by the number of guests trying to shoehorn their way into the hotel with a dozen shopping bags in each hand. And after a hectic day, this is a fantastic place to unwind. The rooms of the hotel are luxurious. The superior rooms (facing the street) have excellent double-glazing and are very quiet, while the Deluxe rooms (ask for one facing the beautiful cloistered courtyard) are more desirable. However, the picks of the bunch are the bi-level suites, with their gorgeous vaulted ceilings. The service is exemplary and personal (there's only 118 rooms), dining facilities are first-class, and it's one hotel where children are treated just as fabulously as those footing the bill.
