Address: Via gesu 8 , Milan 20121, Italy Show on map
A fashionista's favourite, this elegant former convent couldn't be further from its 15th-century monastic roots - or closer to the throbbing heart of Milan's fashion houses. The rooms are lavishly decorated, many facing a wonderfully serene central courtyard. This is a wonderful address for those on a shopping expedition, as demonstrated by the number of guests trying to shoehorn their way into the hotel with a dozen shopping bags in each hand. And after a hectic day, this is a fantastic place to unwind. The rooms of the hotel are luxurious. The superior rooms (facing the street) have excellent double-glazing and are very quiet, while the Deluxe rooms (ask for one facing the beautiful cloistered courtyard) are more desirable. However, the picks of the bunch are the bi-level suites, with their gorgeous vaulted ceilings. The service is exemplary and personal (there's only 118 rooms), dining facilities are first-class, and it's one hotel where children are treated just as fabulously as those footing the bill.

The hotel's atmospheric bar, Il Foyer, is housed in what was the church of the convent, and the hotel's signature restaurant, Il Teatro, is very well-regarded. Once outside the door, you're right in shopping heaven, the Quadrilatero d'Oro.
The walls of Il Foyer are festooned with sketches that Filippo Peroni made for Teatro alla Scala.
