The Hotel Ukraina sits majestically on the banks of the Moscow River facing the White House, meaning superb vistas from some rooms. If you can't swing a room with a view, head downstairs to stroll around the lush grounds and admire the centrepiece fountain, splashing in synchronicity with lights and music. The hotel used to boast that it had preserved the atmosphere of the 1950s, which was no empty assertion. Besides crystal chandeliers and wide staircases, the lobby featured a fantastic ceiling fresco depicting the joyous communist Ukrainian countryside. It remains to be seen whether these quirky details will survive the ongoing renovations when the Ukraina reopens as a five-star property. The Ukraina of the 21st century will offer spacious 35-sq-m rooms; technology like wi-fi access and satellite television; simple comforts such as terry cloth bathrobes and turn-down service; and extra amenities such as a spa and fitness centre, tennis courts and art gallery. In September 2008, the hotel administration announced that the new Ukraina will also have a new name - probably reflecting the international chain that has financed the new digs.

Head over to the busy, bustling Dorogomilovsky market. Even if you're not shopping, it is entertaining to peruse the tables piled high with homemade cheese and jam, golden honey, vibrantly coloured spices, silver fish posing on beds of ice, and huge slabs of meat hanging from the ceiling.
At 206m (675ft) - including the steeple and star - this imposing Stalinist skyscraper was the tallest hotel in Russia when it was built in 1957.
