Nothing short of an Art Nouveau masterpiece, the historic Metropol brings an artistic touch to every nook and cranny, from the famous mosaic on the facade to the semi-precious stonework in the lobby. The overall effect is breathtaking, but the charm lies in the details, like the 19th-century wrought-iron lift, exquisitely adorned with stained glass. The restaurant's colourful ceiling is a tourist attraction in its own right. The Metropol strives to maintain a historic ambience throughout, decorating the rooms with period furniture and Oriental rugs. Antiques and artwork fill the higher-priced suites. Rooms are small by modern standards, unless you upgrade to a 'superior' room; the more affordable singles are downright cramped. Bathrooms are also smaller than you might expect, with old-fashioned tiles and simple tubs. While these details detract from the decadence of staying in an upscale hotel, they certainly say something for its authenticity, thus adding to the charm. And while the Metropol is something of a museum itself, Moscow's other sights are also at your doorstep.

An evening at the Bolshoi Theatre is still one of Moscow's most romantic options, and if you are staying at the Metropol, the famous theatre is just across the square. Catch one of the classic operas or ballets in the glittering auditorium.
The ceramic work on the side of the hotel facing Teatralnaya pl is by the artist Golovin. The script used quotes Nietzsche: 'Again the same story: when you build a house you notice that you have learned something.' During the Soviet era, these wise words were replaced with something more appropriate for the time: 'Only the dictatorship of the proletariat can liberate mankind from the oppression of capitalism.' Lenin, of course.
