The metallic skyscraper towering over the Moscow River is the swish Swissôtel Krasnye Kholmy, named for this little-known neighbourhood of Moscow. With convenient access to Paveletskaya station and Domodedovo airport, not to mention the avant garde International House of Music, Krasnye Kholmy is an enticing, up-and-coming district.

The Swissôtel's lobby bar is appropriately called the Light Bar. The moniker refers not only to the sunlight streaming in through the glass ceiling and the creamy colour scheme, but also to the feeling of weightlessness that pervades the hotel. Rooms are sumptuous, subtle and spacious. Fluffy feather pillows, king-size beds, flat-screen TVs, huge bathrooms with separate shower and bath and heated floors - all are de rigueur. The decor is minimalist: dark hardwood floors and a few modernist paintings, but nothing to detract from the striking city skyline. If you don't want to dish out the cash for a night, you can still enjoy the views: head up to the City Space Bar on the 32nd floor. Snag a table on the west side of the building, to witness a spectacular sunset over Moscow's golden domes. Reduced rates on weekends.
