Comprised of a four-, a five- and a six-star hotel, the Shangri-La Resort has brought modern tourism to Muscat. Discreetly burrowed into the side of a mountain and arranged around a glorious sandy bay and adjacent headland, this brand new and lavishly landscaped resort has something to delight everyone. The rumours abounded: the beach is in shade, the site is too barren, there's not enough funding. Now the resort is finally open, however, even the most cynical of critics has been silenced and rooms in all three hotels are booking out fast. The resort's simple, attractive design, gorgeous landscape gardening and stunning location offer a first class holiday experience even for those staying at Al-Bandar, the more business-oriented of the three hotels. One might have wished perhaps that the sophisticated Al-Husn was slightly less pink, but that's only until its reflection is seen scattered all along the surf line at low tide. One could have hoped that Al-Waha, the easy-going family hotel, accessed via a tunnel through the cliff, had more sea-facing balconies, but that's only until the pool lights are turned on.

Meandering between hotels, a lazy river offers a fun way of travelling between watering holes. Vistas of the famed rock arch and secluded beaches give a sense of purpose to a stroll. The well-established Oman Dive Centre is next to the resort and a brand new marina is planned for early 2006. For those after serious exercise, Muscat's hidden 40km cycle-and-walking track is just above Bandar Jissar.
