Superlatives run short for this gorgeous veteran of a hotel. From the entrance with its ornately shaped terracotta mouldings to its grand lobby and comfortable rooms, this hotel honours its legendary past at every turn. The 600-room Hotel Monteleone of today would surely please founder Antonio Monteleone (honoured with a plaque near the elevators), who founded the original 64-room hotel in 1886. The hotel has long been a destination for writers, dissolute and otherwise. Fascinating displays chronicle the careers of residents such as Hemingway, Faulkner, Capote and many more. The 600 rooms come in a myriad of flavours, but all are decorated in a palette of golden hues that add richness to the luxurious furnishings. Given the long and varied heritage of the property, rooms vary greatly in overall quality. Aim for the 'Deluxe' level as this ensures interesting views of the French Quarter and river.

Some guests apparently liked the Monteleone so much that they never left. Numerous sightings of childlike apparitions on the 14th (really the 13th) floor have been documented. Others have claimed to have seen a patron in the classic Carousel Bar, who wasn't there. Maybe it was disorientation caused by the twinkling lights and slowly rotating floor, maybe the ghost was thirsty.
