Ground Zero for the tourist excesses of Mardi Gras, this hotel has a gracious charm other times of year. It's a vast place that fills the block behind its traditional facade. Rooms are well appointed, which is more than you can say about the guests on the balconies on Fat Tuesday. With 483 rooms, the Royal Sonesta is huge, but it manages a more intimate charm here and there: check out the turreted rooms. The pool courtyard may be vast, but another courtyard off the lobby is a shady retreat, complete with lots of low-hanging fruit on mature orange trees. Rooms are pretty straightforward, there are many different locations to choose from: right off the pool, balcony, courtyard, etc. The lobby goes through the building and is furnished with plush traditional sofas and chairs that provide a nice counterpoint to the many columns. Let's be clear, during the peak of Mardi Gras you won't be getting in here unless you're a guest.
