Coated in zinc-colored metal panels, the luxury hotel Gansevoort's 14 storys tower above one-time meatpacking buildings now transformed into Manhattan's hippest new home for boutiques, restaurants and clubs.Opened in 2004, the Gansevoort is both a place to be seen and to stay. Out front, the columns change color at night, and the rooftop bar, Plunge, draws block-long lines of well-dressed locals looking for a Hudson River view for their martini. Inside, light pours in the expansive windows of the Gansevoort's rooms - best if facing west in the upper floors. Rooms are luscious and airy with fudge-colored suede headboards, illuminated bathroom and closet doors, plasma TVs and a stereo playing the hotel's own CD as you walk in. Some rooms have balconies. Deluxe rooms add on a seating area by the window. In addition to a small business center and spa, the rooftop swimming pool is a big plus, with underwater music and a cover to keep dipping an option in winter. Breakfast is served in the swank Ono restaurant downstairs, which focuses on sushi and tuna steaks in the afternoon.
