This red-brick tower, completely rebuilt in 1995 by its Japanese owners, certainly keeps a Japanese vibe, with hushed halls, mahogany staircases and piped-in classical music in its relaxed lobby. Museum-quality artwork is throughout, like the Botero dog sculpture facing the sitting area - its tongue worn from people touching it 'for luck.'The story goes that the Kitano family from Japan were so displeased with NYC hotel services, they bought the Murray Hill Hotel (a former Rockefeller property) in 1973, and eventually transformed it into this sleek 18-floor business hotel. Carpeted rooms are simple but comfortable, quiet and with all the usual amenities. Best is the remove-your-shoes, traditional ryokan-like Japanese suite, with wood floors, tatami mats and tea area. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a big fan of the basement sushi bar Hakubai, with closing screens for private dining. Live jazz is featured Wednesday to Friday in the mezzanine bar. Visitors can use the nearby New York Sports Club, and there's a business center to make your print-outs.
