Coming close to a New York hotel scene in a wacky Coen brothers flick, the timeless, seven-story Hotel 31 is a budget hotel with 70 available rooms appealing to budget travelers.

Reached by lift or stairs, half of the rooms - all decked with blue-chequered carpets, floral bedspreads and burgundy blinds - have small, clean private bathrooms. For the others, there are a couple of shared bathrooms with shower per five or six rooms. Nothing fancy - just small rooms, with a bed, cable TV, dresser and small desk in some. Working in the 1940 townhouse for over 20 years, Zygmunt (aka Ziggie) is an elderly bald comic quite fond of throwing out one-liners: 'Welcome to the 31...heaven, I mean' or 'Only the old lady's allowed on the rooftop...Mother Nature'. Returned wisecracks will usually not be acknowledged, nor do they need to be. All rooms have dial-up internet access. There's no breakfast, public area or nonsmoking rooms. But it's Midtown for cheap - and comes with free jokes.
