A funky mix of modern and classic - glam cruise liner theme inside, Greek columns outside - the Royalton's '90s heyday may be past, but the scenester trumpets still blare, making it stand out amid the other Old New York hotels in the area.

Another Ian Schrager and Philippe Starck creation, the sleek hotel has deep blue carpet (like water) rushing through its curving hallways and 'porthole' numbers on the doors. Low mattresses - topped with down comforters and 300-thread-count Egyptian sheets - poke out from a wood nook onto a clean and cool layout. Superior rooms have more space than the (relatively roomy) standard rooms, though a good portion is wasted with an exercise bike adjoining Starck's luscious, marble bathrooms with stainless-steel sinks. Rooms come with wi-fi and dial-up internet, as well as TVs with web TV access. There's also a 24-hour fitness center, plus the excellent 44 restaurant and sunken lobby lounge (with chess and Chinese checkers boards out till 15:00, when the cocktail gurglers take over).
