Luxury all the way but geared for fun (rooftop pool and jogging track, basement racquetball, home-made coloring books for kids, 'fuhgettaboudit' privacy door-signs), the 42-floor Le Parker Meridien is an experience the second you walk into the Gothic-style archway of its mirrored, towering lobby or peer over Central Park from north-side rooms.

In a sea of cherry-wood paneling, the welcoming 730 rooms tread the line between modern and comfort. All come with a rotating entertainment center home to a 81cm (32in) TV with DVD player and VCR, Aeron desks and many guest-friendly touches (eg side-cut bedside drawers to put away bedside reading). Three excellent eateries make the downstairs a meeting ground: Norma's is famed for chichi breakfasts; classy Seppi's - with painted tin plates covering ceiling and walls - serves a 'French burrito'; but best is the unnamed burger joint (behind a curtain in a lobby corner, indicated only by a neon hamburger sign), which feels like walking into a town-square diner in John Cougar's hometown. Trainers at the massive basement fitness center, Gravity, offer 'quickie' work-out sessions, and an open-air jogging track - up from the fake-grass sunning area - is on top of the building.
