Ever since the Londonskaya opened its doors in the mid-19th century, it has attracted members of the cultural elite. The hotel could use a little freshening up (there are smudged walls and somewhat worn furniture). Nevertheless, with iron-lace balustrades, stained-glass windows and crystal chandeliers, the Londonskaya oozes grand Regency charm.

Chekhov, Mayakovsky, Stanislavsky, Isadora Duncan, Babel, Vysotsky and Mikhalkov, to name a few (see the 4th-floor museum) have all set foot in this hotel. Although it was last refurbished in the early 1990s it seems that the staff, though pleasant, could also use a little freshening up in the enthusiasm department. It boasts both an excellent restaurant and a primo position, along a waterfront tree-lined pedestrian path not far from the Potemkin steps.
