The sculpted facade of the Grand Hotel is one of many impressive edifices lining Karl Johans gate. Most of the guest rooms have modern and generic interiors, the exception being those on the 'ladies floor' which have been outrageously decked out by female Norwegian celebrities.Directly facing Oslo's busiest boulevard and favourite tourist promenade, this oldster dates to 1874. Though old, much of its antique character was erased long ago, with the lobby most recently redone in a historicist pastiche of over-shiny 'brass' light fixtures, red carpeting and an unfortunate plaster frieze behind the reception desk. The Deluxe rooms on the top floor have retained the dimensions and mouldings of yore. The 'ladies' floor' is a must see, with 17 rooms individually redesigned by some of Norway's top female celebrities. Iram Haa's room with its bright pillows, illuminated flowers, and paper globes contrasts strongly with the space designed by Maria Bonnevie, who evidently likes horses. Meanwhile, huge pink-and-black headshots stare perpetually in the hallway outside in Warhol-esque fashion.
