Address: Kongeveien 26 , Oslo 0787, Norway Show on map
Part of the Rica chain, this full-service place is built around a sanatorium dating from 1891, and has one of the finest views in Oslo. The old building is architecturally distinguished; the new bits are not. This hotel is a bit of a tease. Part of the complex dates to the 19th century and is a fantastically preserved example of Norwegian 'dragon-style' architecture with deeply carved wooden columns, heavy log construction and stencilled interiors. While guests are free to roam the romantic corridors of the old building, they sleep and take breakfast in two lengthy glass and brick wings of ordinary post-war design. One good feature about these rooms is that one wall is almost entirely glass, allowing expansive views over the hotel car park, a golf course beyond and the distant Oslofjord as it vanishes into the horizon. Warning: half the rooms enjoy this spectacle. Those in the rear should be avoided.

If you like ski jumps, the one from the 1992 Olympics operates as a museum and is a five-minute walk from the hotel. Otherwise, you're pretty close to hiking trails and panoramic views. The city centre is 40 minutes away by tram.
Getting there: Airport Express train services operate every ten minutes between Oslo Airport and the central train station, from where trams run to Holmenkollen station. Oslo's extensive transport network includes the subway, buses and trams, while a car is useful for Journey's further-afield.
