You'll sense the difference at this intimate, elegant hotel the moment the door is swept open for you, revealing the hushed, rarefied air the Bristol exudes. Oriental carpets, flamboyant orchids and lots of precious woods abound, and that's just the lobby.

There are only 56 rooms at this 'Leading Small Hotel of the World', which, coupled with the 24-hour butler service, means you'll be scrupulously looked after. Need your pumps shined or pantsuit pressed? Craving Mozart or Miles? No problem, your wish is their command, giving you time to soak in the deep tub before curling up in a fluffy robe. If work's on the agenda, fear not: each room comes with a fax, Internet connection and well-stocked bar for when the going gets tough. For play time, there's a state-of-the-art entertainment centre - your butler can fetch DVDs from the digital library. You might want to request turn down service, since the gorgeous bed-cum-cloud is piled so high with pillows, it's a chore just to store them for the night.
