This sedate, very stylish hotel at the southwestern corner of Montmartre Cemetery and due west of the Butte de Montmartre (Montmartre Hill) has 98 spacious and well-designed rooms and suites, some excellent outlets and quite simply the best views in town. The Terrass - yes, it's on the 7th floor and huge - hotel is very sedate and stylish; you can almost hear the French word correcte being whispered; those tired of all the froufrou and gimcrackery of the boutique hotel brigade would be wise to choose this place. Rooms are spacious, very bright and prettily decorated; we love the yellow silk on the walls of some guestrooms. For the ultimate Parisian experience, choose double room No 608 for stunning views of the Eiffel Tower and Panthéon or No 802, which boasts its own private terrace. The superstitious should eschew room No 508; it looks directly onto the cemetery. The 6th floor is reserved for nonsmokers but only some guestrooms are air-conditioned.

Just north of the hotel, the wonderful Café qui Parle (24 rue Caulaincourt, 18e) is a fine example of where modern-day eateries are headed in Paris, with inventive, reasonably priced dishes amid comfortable, very relaxed surroundings.
Joseph de Maistre (1753-1821), lawyer, diplomat, writer and philosopher, and namesake of the street where the hotel is located, was one of the most influential spokesmen for a counter-revolution in the period immediately following the French Revolution. He argued that only governments founded on a Christian constitution could avoid the disorder and bloodletting that followed revolution.
