We've visited, inspected and stayed in lots and lots of hotels in our day, but it's rare to come across anything quite like the Murano, a 52-room 'urban resort' south of Place de la République with a classical 19th-century exterior and a 21st-century inside. The hotel's subtitle (for lack of a better term) is 'Urban Resort' suggesting you come in, kick off your shoes and sink your toes in the hotel's figurative sand. And with public areas such as the courtyard restaurant under glass and a cool jazz and DJ bar with over 100 vodkas, that's easily accomplished. Lyonnaise designer Raymond Morel's interior décor features throughout - silver leather settees, red glitter lift, a minimalist and very white fireplace running the length of the lobby. The huge guestrooms (unlocked by digital imprint) are where he comes to the fore and any place that allows you to change the colour scheme of your room gets our vote. This is Paris, so the bathrooms are full of design guru Philippe Starck-esque touches. There are rooms set aside for nonsmokers and it is air-conditioned throughout. A spa with heated pool and hamman was under construction at the time of writing.

Chez Jenny (39 blvd du Temple, 3e), a cavernous, 1930s-style brasserie almost opposite the hotel, serves a gargantuan choucroute garnie (sauerkraut cooked in wine and served with assorted prepared meats), but we suspect that most people visit to admire the stunning marquetry of Alsatian scenes on the 1st floor.
