The historic E&O is Penang's grandest and most famous hotel, founded in 1884 by the Sarkies brothers. The all-suite hotel has a variety of spacious, tastefully furnished rooms and it's worth the extra outlay for one facing the sea.

Like the better known, and considerably more expensive, Raffles Hotel in Singapore, the E&O was founded by the eccentric Sarkies brothers. This grand old dame, which was completely refurbished in 2001 after years of neglect, remains an evocative reminder of the romantic age of travel. The guest list from its early 20th-century heyday reads like a who's who of high society; Rudyard Kipling, Noel Coward, Somerset Maugham and others wined and dined here. These days the glamour may have worn off, and the pith-helmeted porters and gift shop may be veering towards theme-park territory, but the E&O is still an impressive and luxurious place to stay, with beautifully furnished suites, some fine restaurants and a pleasant seafront terrace to take your tiffin.
