Just a handful of rooms are on offer at this small HI hostel, ideally located near trendy Hawthorne Blvd. Penny-pinchers seeking a warm bed outside downtown Portland have a fine choice in this well-situated hostel. It's a great hangout with kitchen access and friendly staff.

The hostel is located in an old Craftsman house with a large front porch and cozy common spaces. It's committed to sustainability and boasts an eco-friendly 'living roof' and rainwater recycling system. There are a few large dorm rooms and two private rooms, all of which share baths. During the summer the side garden turns into an events area complete with a small stage for open-mike nights. Free bread and bagels are served all day, and there's a cheap cook-it-yourself pancake breakfast and free wireless. Other pluses include bike rentals and a tent area for campers. Allergics beware: a resident kitty prowls the premises. Need a private room? Snag the one with a private porch, which has a great view of the planted eco-roof.
