Address: Praca d filipa de lencastre 62 , Porto 4050, Portugal Show on map
An exquisite time warp with liveried doormen, crystal chandeliers, and lavish panelling, this place feels like a royal getaway reconstructed in the heart of the city. Digs are modern but with all the trimmings, though standard rooms are a little careworn; superiors are quite up to scratch. The hotel's rather unimposing facade doesn't quite prepare you for what awaits inside. Common areas are at once cosy and majestic, including a fireplace whose brass fittings are polished so brightly that they seem to combust even when the fires are not lit. The hotel restaurant is equally regal - easily the most luxurious eatery in the city - while a plant-filled courtyard provides a more casual counterpoint to all the indoor finery. Rooms seem to be fitted out with industrially produced antiques that are a slight letdown after the lobby, especially in the standard rooms, which are also a tad threadbare. Superior rooms, on the other hand, are quite up to scratch. Bathrooms are large and marble-lined throughout.

Just down the street from the hotel is Porto's iconic Torre dos Clérigos, the elaborate baroque tower that rises 76m above Porto's centre and provides incomparable views of its squares and red-tiled roofs. Be prepared to climb 225 steps to the top - the tower, built in the 18th century by Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, predates the elevator.
