Occupying a cluster of colourfully haphazard buildings on the choicest stretch of the Ribeira waterfront, the Porto Pestana is hands down the most sophisticated choice in Porto. From the supple leather seating in its bar to the fine river views, this place is all restrained class.

The hotel's elegant, 18th-century facade sits on Praça da Ribeira, Porto's archetypical quayside square. Service is suave, and rooms are classically decorated but impeccably modern in terms of convenience and comfort. It's true that some are oddly shaped and sometimes a tad dinky, but that's inevitable when you are working with 12 different buildings, parts of which date to medieval times. Angle (and save up) for one of the riverfront rooms, most of which have multiple French windows that look across to the port wine lodges across the river - a lovely sight day and night. And don't miss the excellent breakfast buffet - a full spread that includes fresh fruits, fine cheeses and hot items like eggs and sausage.
