This slick and funky apartment hotel in the heart of the city is value for money. It effortlessly combines old with new and is unashamedly environmentally friendly. Boasting four 'green stars' the Alto doesn't ram the tree-hugging stuff down your throat either. It is a genuine class act.

You'll be struck by the neo-baroque facade before you even walk through the front door of this heritage-listed former Australian Railway Union building, but the fascination doesn't end there. Eco-friendly virtues come in the form of energy-saving appliances, recycling bins in every room, water-saving fixtures, carbon offsets and a restaurant stocked solely with Victorian produce. Rooms are tastefully furnished, spotless and stylish. The one-bedroom suites have full kitchens; some also have spas but those without are located towards the back of the building for genuine peace and quiet. Studio rooms have small kitchenettes, comfy sofas and plasma TVs. Looking for a personal touch among all this modernity? Well, the Matt Irwin photos adorning every room tell a specific Melbourne tale. Swap some books in the exchange library and have a go on the massage chairs in the guest room.
