If you're looking for a sleek treat, check in to this swanky, ultramodern hotel. The rooftop garden is one of the best places in town to watch a sunset, and on Thursdays a cocktail hour livens up the joint.

From the outside, the historic building only hints at its updated interior, but the minute you walk inside, the casual soul music piping through the lobby sets the tone. Original artwork adorns the walls and everything tends toward the modern and angular. Rooms can feel a bit cookie cutter at times, but then again, if the cookie tastes good, who cares? Rooms have nice touches, like Italian linens and whirlpool tubs. Stripy primary colors liven up the velveteen furnishings. The narrow, indoor lap pool feels very New York, and the place is decked out with all the trappings for the new millennium business traveler.
