Opened in a renovated complex of Renaissance and Baroque houses in 2004, the Alchymist is a thoroughly sumptuous all-suite hotel with a range of richly furnished rooms and a luxurious spa in the basement.

This grand Baroque palace looks stately and fairly sedate on the outside, but the drapes, gilt, chandeliers and stucco inside make a bold statement of luxury, which may be a little overpowering for those with more minimalist tastes. Nevertheless, this is a hotel with plenty of character, composed of four separate buildings dating back as far as the 15th century, and featuring Gothic and Renaissance elements, though it's 18th-century style that's most apparent in the spacious suites. Original paintings from the 16th to the 19th centuries adorn the walls and some suites come with lounges and balconies. The largest, known as the 'ambassador suite', has three sizeable bedrooms. Downstairs there's an over-decorated Venetian-style cafe and an excellent restaurant. The hotel also has its own spa with massage rooms, a sushi bar, a small pool and an art gallery.
