Fit for a king (or for that matter an empress, an emir or a sultan), which is just as well because that is principally what this regal, super-luxurious hotel was built for. Despite regal prices, it is fully booked months in advance. At Emirates Palace there's far more of the 'Palace' than of the 'Emirates'. Indeed, the enormous, multi-winged, cupola-clad red stone building could be mistaken for a flight of 19th-century Orientalist fancy from Western Europe rather than anything distinctively Emirati. That's not a criticism: one rarely encounters such an ambitious horizontal building project these days and one has to admire the audacity of the domed gate houses and flying ramps en route to the foyer. The night lights alone, stencilling the arches of all 302 luxury rooms, 40 suites, 16 palace suites and four presidential suites, are worth a visit. Whether the Palace offers the best choice of accommodation depends on whether a guest is looking for comfort or for an experience. This majestic hotel offers both, but the long walks between bed and supper can strain one's patience after a long day at the office.

With a marina, a spa, pool, beach, tennis and squash courts on site, together with over 15 different cafes and restaurants, business centres and ballrooms, it's hard to imagine where else one would need to go. If a pie and chips beckons, however, then the breakwater is a five-minute walk over the bridge and the corniche extends from the Palace doorstep all the way into town.
