Set back from the hustle and bustle of the main coastal road, this venerable backpackers has undergone a recent facelift and has lost much of its old cell-block atmosphere, though it's still a touch institutional.

The main lodge building is roughly rectangular, with most of the bedrooms arranged along a central corridor upstairs: the rooms are plain and boxy and they certainly won't win any prizes for interior design, but they're comfortable enough in a boarding-school kind of way. Downstairs there's a large shared kitchen and a jazzily painted indoor lounge leading onto a small outside garden, where there's an ever-popular weekly island barbecue (for a fee). There's also a large eight-bed dorm upstairs, but you'll need enough people to fill it.
