Reykjavík's first youth hostel, this large, streamlined building outside the centre remains a magnet for budget travellers from across the globe. Although the hostel packs crowds in during summer (it can and often does accommodate 170 people), it boasts an excellent range of facilities and the friendly staff run a neat, orderly ship.Rooms here are standard backpacker issue: trim bunk beds, a table, and a decent-size window to allow lots of that early morning (and late-evening) sun. The hostel has three well-equipped kitchens and a notice board in the lobby full of invitations from solo travelers to share car-rental expenses, explore the interior or go trekking. Other facilities include 24hr reception, self-service washers and dryers, four computers, a TV lounge (check out the Icelandic films available at reception), free wi-fi, bicycle hire, and an outdoor patio perfect for taking in a bit of sun before heading into town. The biggest drawback is the hotel's location, 3km (1.8mi) from Laugavegur.
