This splendid neo-classical hotel has been completely renovated, and boasts lavish rooms, first-rate service and an enviable location in old Reykjavík overlooking the small plaza Austurvöllur. The city's most historic hotel was completely overhauled in 2007. Its formerly charming if somewhat antiquated rooms have now been replaced with super-smart beige, black and cream décor. Parquet floors, leather headboards and flatscreen Bang & Olufsen TVs are standard throughout, lending the hotel an elegant (if rather masculine) feel. Quadruple-glazed windows cut out drunken weekend street noise. The bathrooms bear original designs - large bathtubs, black-and-white tiles, and the biggest and best showerheads in Reykjavík. It's a lovely place, and has hosted Nobel laureates and royalty. It's all the more enchanting when you learn some of its eccentric past: owner Johannes af Borg and his wife, who named their daughters after Icelandic volcanoes, continued living in the hotel after their split, she in the gorgeous Tower Suite (the jewel in the hotel's crown), he in room 111.

Cafe Paris, on the nearby corner of Austurvöllur Sq, is a great place for people-watching.
Icelander Johannes af Borg, born in 1883, was a champion fighter. Following his participation in the 1908 London Olympics, he teamed up with Barnum & Bailey in America and went on to travel the world as a strong man, at times fighting unarmed against gun-and knife-wielding rivals. He hid away his substantial winnings, and upon returning home, opened Iceland's first luxury hotel, the Hotel Borg.
