This fantastically located hotel has modern rooms, a stylish lobby and all the extras you'd expect from a four-star hotel (gym, business centre, doting staff). Although it's part of the Radisson chain, this boutique hotel isn't stamped from the same uninspiring mould you may have encountered in other cities.

Named after the year of the building's construction, the Hotel 1919 is one of Reykjavik's historic landmarks, originally built as the headquarters for Eimskip, Iceland's first shipping company. This classic four-storey building retains traces of its illustrious past. You enter a spacious lobby with marble floors, polished black leather sofas and huge windows facing onto the old street. Upstairs, the rooms are universally attractive, with wooden floors, large beds, flat-screen TVs and wireless access. Keep walking up the carved iron stairwells to the 4th floor, and you reach the suites (rooms 414 and 412) that once formed the gargantuan office of Eimskip's chairman.
