In a handsome three-storey building not far from the centre of town, this cosy B&B has charming rooms furnished with a mix of elegance and sass, and an owner who treats guests with doting attention.

Just 10min from the boutiques and cafes along Laugavegur street, the Hotel Phoenix has an allure that makes it a real find. Step inside the deep-red building with its forest-green shutters and you'll experience the elegance of an old Reykjavík home. Beneath a chandelier, you'll pass antiques lining the entryway and ascending the old staircase to the nine rooms above. Each chamber bears the eclectic imprint of the designer-cum-owner. While a room bearing leopard-print chairs may sound like a garish venture, here among polished hardwood floors and fine lighting, the daring tends to work. Out back, a private patio makes a fine place for a picnic or a drink.
